Sally first witnessed the power of yoga and meditation as a child during a summer vacation visit to an ashram with her family. Later, breathing practices and meditation were grounding techniques she used before rehearsals and performances, they remained an essential tether whilst navigating the corporate world. In the early 2000s a consistent physical practice of yoga (āsana) was added to her toolkit.
After moving to America in 2010, she jumped at the chance to deepen her personal practice under the guidance of Graham Fowler, founder of Peachtree Yoga. Becoming a yoga teacher was not her intention. Friends and neighbours soon began to ask advice about starting or expanding their own practices, and so it evolved – mentoring students as they undertook teacher training, private tuition, and intimate group classes in wonderful locations all became the norm and corporate life fell away. The Highlands of Scotland became home in 2015, at that time there were very few yoga teachers, classes were mainly at leisure centres and were mostly focussed on being a workout – a world away from her practice and teachings. Alongside private tuition Sally created an inclusive program for beginners, that helped students start their own practice, whatever their ability, and a series of workshops and retreats to build and sustain this new community. She is passionate about empowering students to develop their own practice and about building community, which gives a sense of accountability and support. Sally is predominantly a student, endlessly interested and open to what (most) moments have to offer; “…every class is a gift because I learn so much through my students.” She adds, “Yoga’s a lifelong adventure because of the ever-changing nature of our bodies, lives and environment. We’re constantly offered the opportunity to stay curious and interested.” She’s committed to self-study and continued education in yogic philosophy and traditions, and ever-evolving medical science. |
